North East loses 549 sq km of forest area

The eight States of the Northeastern region (NER) have witnessed loss of green cover to the extent of 549 square km. Assam has lost 19 square km of forest cover. According to the report, Assam with a geographical area of 78,438 square km has only 1,444 square km of dense forest, 11,404 sq km of moderate forest and 14,825 sq km of open forest, recording 35.28 per cent green area. Manipur and Nagaland have lost the highest forest cover of 190 sq km and 146 sq km, respectively, while Sikkim has managed to keep its green cover intact. Arunachal Pradesh has the largest area 80.50 per cent green cover, followed by Mizoram 90.68 per cent, Nagaland 80.33 per cent. Meghalaya which lost 46 sq km of forest cover has 77.02 per cent green area. The Northeastern region constitutes only 7.98 per cent of the geographical area of the country, but accounts for nearly one-fourth of its forest cover. Because of its biodiversity richness, the North East has been identified as one of the 18 biodiversity hot spots of the world.

Tea Estate:

Phaskowa Tea Estate has forests that are a bird watcher's paradise and it is also the natural home of the Asiatic Elephant. You may witness a herd of elephants strolling down the mountains or even catch a glimpse of the Royal Bengal Tiger or a leopard at the Buxa Tiger Reserve. Rivers & streams, gushing and gurgling down the hills meet you at every mile or two. Here, the flora and the fauna break all records of biodiversity and in between these virgin forests are the settlements of small tribes like Mech, Rava, Oraon, Munda, Kora etc. and even the smallest surviving tribe, the Toto. Besides the experience of wildlife sanctuaries and national parks, you can experience Raja Bhatkhawa Museum of Nature Integration, Sub-Himalayan treks, or simply lie back and relax at the bungalow and let your soul soak in the nature's splendor.

Neora Valley National Park:

Neora Valley National is situated in the Kalimpong subdivisionunder Darjeeling District, West Bengal, India . It spreads over an area of 88 km² and is one of the richest biological zones in the entire Northeast. It is the land of the elegant Red Panda in the pristine undisturbed natural habitat with rugged inaccessible hilly terrain and rich diverse flora and fauna making this park an important wilderness zone. Neora Valley National Park are birders' paradise; some of India's most sought-after birds are found here. The semi-evergreen forests between 1600 m and 2700 m is the home of several rarities.

Tinchule:

Tinchule is a small village. It is a new tourist spot attracting off beat eco tourists. Around Tinchule you can visit some sight seeing like Sai Temple, Tinchule monastery, Sunrise Point and Gumbadara view point. From Sunrise point you can experienced excellent view of sunrise in the morning. Also this hill top point provides fantastic view of the East Himalayan mountain range.

Charkole:

Charkol is a small village at an altitude of 5000 feet overlooking a green valley with magnificent views of Mt. Kanchenjungha. It is one of the newest destinations on the Eastern Himalayas just 15 kms off Lolegaon and 30 kms from Kalimpong. This sleepy valley of Charkol is also a bird watcher’s delight. In Charkol, you can build a bonfire at night under the star studded sky, take a nature walk along the coniferous forests under the warm glow of sun with birds and colorful flora everywhere or brisk on the village resort’s jogging track.

Pedong:

Pedong lies 20 km east of Kalimpong on the way to Lava at an altitude of 1,240 metres (4.071 feet). Straddling a ridge between Kalimpong and Lava, Pedong is a small quiet and peaceful town nestled at a comfortable elevation of 4500ft, which ensures a pleasant climate round the year. Surrounded by pine forests on rolling hill slopes Pedong commands some magnificent views of snow ranges of Mount Kanchenjunga. The town, which is located on a ridge, commands a panoramic view of the Kanchenjunga and the Himalayan mountains.

Green Island, Jhalong:

It is a nice tiny island on river jaldhaka surrounded by tall green mountains. Distance between Green Island & Siliguri is 92 Kms. To reach this island, you have to cross a small & beautiful hanging bridge. You can here the roaring sound of River Jaldhaka. From this island you can do sight seeing to Jaldhaka hydel power project, Jhalong & Bindu (India & Bhutan border) etc…It is a very good upcoming weekend spot

Rishikhola:

Reshi or Rishi or Rishi Khola is located in the Kalimpong sub division on the West Bengal –Sikkim Border. Rishi Khola derives its name from the Reshi River (Khola in Nepali meaning a small stream) and has gained prominence as an upcoming offbeat tourist destination as recently a number of resorts have come up on the banks of the river, not surprisingly because of its unique location and scenic beauty. Topographically, Reshi Khola divides the states of West Bengal and Sikkim. It’s a perfect stopover for tourists intending to visit 'The Silk Route'. It is also a nice picnic and camping ground for tourists to have fun and chill out on the banks of the river rishi. For trekkers and adventure lovers, Reshi offers innumerable opportunities for rock climbing and light treks.

Aritar Lake:

'Aritar', a region in East Sikkim of India under Rongli Sub-Division, is known for its natural and landscaped beauty. It is located on the edge of the Himalayas, and can be reached in about four hours' drive from Gangtok via either Pakyong or Rangpo. Isolated from the rest of the state, on the far eastern border of Sikkim and bounded by Mt. Kanchendzonga, the region is characterized by lush forest, mountains and rivers. The Aritar Lake (Ghati-Tso) is a nearby attraction, as are traditional villages and monasteries such as Lingsay.

Uttare:

Situated in the west Sikkim, you can reach Uttare from Pelling, Gezing or Dentum. Distance between Siliguri & Uttare is 150 Kms. On the way you will pass Singsor bridge, said to be the second highest bridge in Asia. The height of Uttare is about 6600ft. Uttare is a small village, famous for its tranquility and natural beauty. The place provides beautiful view to the Himalayan mountains and is yet relatively less traveled by tourists. During winter you can experience the mountains around here are covered with snow allowing heavenly views.
